Antique Victorian Majolica Stilton Cheese Dome & Stand | Thomas Forester & Sons | 1870–1880
A wonderful example of Victorian majolica, this impressive Stilton cheese dome and matching stand were made by Thomas Forester & Sons in Staffordshire, England, around 1870–1880.
Featuring the highly collectible 'Stork in the Marsh' design, the dome is beautifully decorated with raised panels of soft pink cranes standing amongst water lilies and reeds. The birds are framed by bamboo-style arches against a rich cobalt blue background, with a matching geometric bamboo-effect handle completing the design.
The accompanying circular stand is equally decorative, which follows the pattern of the dome and is embellished with leaves and flowers. The base has beautifully glazed tortoiseshell centre in shades of emerald green and earthy brown.
Originally designed to keep large Stilton cheeses in perfect condition during Victorian dinner parties, this substantial two-piece set is as useful today as it is decorative.
Perfect for serving cheese when entertaining, as a centrepiece on a dining table or simply displayed on a dresser or sideboard. A really special piece of Victorian pottery that deserves to be seen and enjoyed.
Condition
In very good antique condition, particularly considering its age of nearly 150 years.
The dome has no structural cracks or repairs, with minimal age-related glaze crazing and tiny nibbles to the rim.
The stand retains its vibrant glazing, with a few chips to the underside (please see all images).
