This stunning pair of vintage hand painted Sutherlands Bone China Pug mantle dogs, in white and grey with gilt decoration to the collars. Each measures approximately 24cms tall.  These dogs are a replica of a pair of pugs from Saltram House in Devon, the originals dating back to the 1700's and come from China during the regin of Emperor Ch'ien Lung.  At first glance they appear to be a complementary pair, each looking at the other.  In fact the only difference is that their bushy tails are fitted one to the left and one to the right.

They’re in superb condition, with bright, crisp gilding. As you’d expect with these, there are slight variations between the two due to being hand painted, both with no chips cracks or crazing.

Highly decorative and surprisingly versatile, these don't just need to be displayed on a mantle they look equally good on a bookshelf, kitchen shelf of even in a bathroom.
